He was sitting at his computer playing a video game. The last thing on his mind was a cyber attack. All of a sudden he noticed something strange was happening to his comments that were not what he said. That’s when Olzhas Barron-Grayson realized that even kids could be victims.

Mark Johnson, who is a computer forensic analyst for the U.S. Attorney in the FBI computer crime lab, said that the software on computers is made by imperfect people.

“Software has bugs or errors that lets hackers use bad software and sneak in the door,” Mr. Johnson said. “If the software isn’t made really well, they (the criminal) can get in easily. They are very difficult to prevent.”

Mr. Johnson added that “criminals take advantage of the holes in the software and they can get in easily.”

Most people have very weak passwords and so it is very easy to break in. The way to prevent that is to have many great passwords. You should have at least 8 characters in your passwords, experts say, with at least one capital, at least one number and a symbol or sign. Don’t use the same password over and over, so have many passwords. Mr. Johnson also suggested to have more than one email account. Have one that you use any time you buy something. Have another one for family, school, and work.

“I have never been hacked,” said Humanities teacher Chris Holmes. “But my son has been hacked by people trying to lure him to different states and countries.”

That was when Mr. Holmes’s son was in high school. His son isn’t the only one.

“A while back I downloaded a multiplayer game that allowed others to post about the game and just in general,” said student Olzhas Barron-Grayson. “The first time I noticed when my comments were not the ones I posted that were bad. It turns out there was a loophole in the system where anyone that had the right equipment could get in and act like me at any time. It was all linked through all of my email.

Olzhas had to create a new account.
